Robot-Based 3-D Test Rig

This is now done by a robot-based 3-D test rig which simulates human movements, thus enabling any kind of load test to be carried out under realistic conditions.

It is one of those single-arm, orange-colored robots normally used to punch and weld sheet metal components for cars in large manufacturing halls. One such industrial robot can also be found in the laboratories of the Fraunhofer Technology Development Group TEG. However, the researchers there have given it much more human qualities. This robot arm can almost perfectly imitate the natural walking movements of a human being, and so, mounted on a treadmill, it walks and walks and walks. The reason for this continuous exertion is a prosthetic foot which is attached to the machine and is being put through its paces.

The TEG researchers have succeeded in developing a 3-D robot test rig that is capable of emulating a variety of different movements.

Conversation with a Leader: Tom Milam

Tom Milam is general manager of AmMed Direct, a Nashville-based Medicare-approved provider of diabetes testing supplies. Milam has been with the company since 2002.

Formerly called Diabetes Direct and having changed its name in 2004, AmMed employs 210 people.

MHS Diabetes Direct LLC is the parent of AmMed Direct.

AmMed Direct recently moved its corporate headquarters. Your thoughts?

We've grown tremendously in the past four years, and we expect that growth to continue as we take advantage of the capabilities our new facility offers.

We had about 190 employees on board when we held our ribbon-cutting a month ago. That compares with 120 employees this time last year, and about 300 we hope to have by the end of this year.

Couple overcomes clash of cultures

Mukesh and Marvin Srivastava are from opposite sides of the world and have little in common, at least on paper.

He's from India and she's from Central America.

They met in a place foreign to both of them--Mississippi--and came to realize they weren't so different after all.

But the two, who have since married and moved to Spotsylvania County, didn't discover that overnight.

It took 11 years.

"We are from different tribes. We are different in culture and different in thinking," he said.

"I think that maybe this 11 years was necessary for us to get to know each other better," she said.

Mukesh, 48, is an assistant professor of computer technology at the University of Mary Washington College of Graduate and Professional Studies in Stafford County.
